Ideas to Help Strengthen Team Performance
Utilize these ideas to help you prevent your teams from struggling and to help with those project basics.
1. Embrace the idea that it is hard work
When forming the team, doing a kick-off meeting to acknowledge challenges and opportunities for group work and leverage ideas and tools to cut them at the pass. Acknowledging that challenges will happen and you have plans for them will promote confidence within your team.
2. Extend professional development skills
Provide content to your team that they can utilize around brainstorming, making decisions, adapting, risks, etc. Give this to them in small doses where they can apply it and not be overwhelmed with information.
3. Define behaviors that are critical for team success
Identify these behaviors for your team early on and keep them in front of the team. Everyone must understand they are accountable for supporting the team values and those of each individual. It’s important for each member to understand they are responsible to recognize problems and stop the process when necessary.
4. Challenge the team to define what success looks like for them
When it comes from them, it stays with them and they are looking for it easier then when it is forced upon them.
5. Choosing right team leaders for the situation
Choose the members based on the need and not on the title. How many of you have seen situations where someone has no business being where they are and they are not adding value?
6. Coach with critical projects
Coaches help a team learn how to talk, collaborate, learn and execute better than team members on their own. Teams will realize with their help that they will cycle through phases of storming, norming and performing. Coaching is required at all of these as unplanned circumstances and challenges arise.
7. Get executives involved
Having these types of people engaged helps cut through corporate road blocks that can sometimes take months to get through. A good sponsor will coach, be an advocate throughout the organization for your project/team, hold you accountable and be approachable and present when needed.
Pick 2 of these ideas and try to implement them in your current environment. Keep in mind, a team does not have to be a project team. It can be your department at your workplace, church team, sports team as well.
